Nice color laser printer. Much smaller than my previous printer and 1/2 the weight. If you haven't had a color printer you'll soon discover that they are much heavier than the monochrome ones. This however is much lighter than I anticipated and it was fairly easy for me to carry upstairs and set up... the old one was a killer. The most important aspect of any printer is CONSUMABLES and of course quality. After doing a bit of research I determined that this printer has a decent price point for the extra capacity toners. Some printers had very inexpensive toner but they only did half the pages. Also important was the OPTION to use generic (which were at a great price via 3rd party sellers; the toners had good reviews) and also the option to REFILL the cartridges. Refilling is something you may want to try. For some it's easier and less of a hassle to buy the name brand and move on. I usually buy the generic ones after reading the reviews remember, color lasers are NOT photo quality.. I still want my brochures to look top notch however. Your friend will be YOUTUBE. I did some research and found that there are kits that make your STARTER cartridges usable after they run out. These reset gears will replace the ones on the starter cartridge so the gears will continue to operate (there is a stop on the gears that prohibit to go any further based on usage). You need to find the appropriate toner powder (Toner Tap for example) and learn how to pull out the stopper and fill and tape over the hole. If you haven't thrown out the starter cartridges you can just buy the refill kits. You can reuse the starter cartridges after replacing the gears (with reset gears: Toner Tap and New Era sell them) and filling them with toner powder. You should be able to fill the empties multiple times. All this can be found via Google and YouTube if you are curious. The quality of my prints are superb, even when using the Toner Saving mode. The print speed is great as well. I connected mine via network cable to my router without problem. I did use the Brother software and it was pretty seamless. Just make sure to uncheck certain things on install if you don't want bloat ware or information sent back to Brother. Be sure to check out Google/YouTube regarding the empty cartridge warnings... usually the toners ARE NOT empty when the warning comes on. The printers usually don't let you print after a while and this is based strictly on a number count.. when you reach a certain number it will say you need to replace the cartridge. You can reset the count via the menu so that the printer will continue. I will update this after I run out of toner (truly run out), buy the Reset Gears for the starter cartridges, buy the refill powder toner and refill the original toners. I will look at the quality and print count for the brand I purchase and update this long post!!!UPDATE: I have printed hundreds of full sheet images and they look great. It depends on the paper and the quality. I am comparing the output to past color printers. Of course the $5,000 models at work look better but for every day business, crafts (I make my own greeting cards) and school; this is a great printer. I still have not used more than 1/2 of my toner and when it reads empty I will try and reset the count number in the printer to get more out of the cartridges. When they are totally empty I will buy the powder toner, reset gears and update again on how it goes!So far, this printer has turned out to be perfect for me. The reason I wound up buying this printer is that I wanted to get a good color laser printer so that I could eliminate the problems with inkjet printers.I had bought an HP color laser printer before buying this Brother laser printer. The HP printer was over $1,000 and was nothing but trouble. The HP printer had a problem with the control panel and all of the printer drivers available for the HP laser printer were very bad. In fact, the HP printer drivers SEVERELY and REPEATEDLY crashed my Windows 7 operating system.Shortly after this, I found it necessary to re-install Windows 7. I'm sure the HP software damaged my Windows 7 operating system. While all of this was taking place, the HP website was severely messed up for something like a month. I wound up having to send the HP printer back. HP's tech support was just as bad as their website and software. This Brother printer comes with perfect drivers and the drivers install with no effort at all. The print quality and print speed are excellent. If you put pictures into your documents, the pictures will print very will (assuming that the photos you're using are good to begin with). You won't quite get photo quality prints. You're going to have to use a good inkjet printer for that. But you can still print good pictures on plain paper and that's something you can't do with an inkjet printer because plain paper gets too wet when you print pictures on it with an inkjet printer. Where plain paper gets really wet, the ink soaks through and the paper gets baggy and there is bleeding of the ink.The overall print quality is at least as good with this Brother laser printer as it is with any inkjet printer and you can print on both sides of any decent printer paper with this Brother laser printer. The ink soaks through any average printer paper that I've used with inkjet printers. The conclusion is that this printer works perfectly and is only a fraction of the cost of the HP laser printer I had and about half the weight of the HP printer. After 10+ years of excellent experience with a Brother HL-5150D (black and white), I wanted to upgrade to a color laser printer and after reading reviews, comparing prices of printers, consumables, etc., I purchased this one from Amazon. This printer is a very good value, both the printer itself and its consumables, and it has good reviews by some web sites. However, after having it for 3 weeks or so, I can't recommend it. It's very noisy when printing in duplex mode, as it makes loud "clack-clack-clack" noises. I though it was defective and contacted Brother Tech Support. They were exceptional (professional, responsive, fast), and sent me a replacement unit, but it makes the same noises. So, the first unit was not defective. It is simply noisy. In addition to that, the print quality is only so-so. The HL-5150D produces smooth letters. The HL-L8250CDN produces letters with jagged edges. I also compared text printouts with those of a HP MFP M476, and there is a noticeable difference in favor of the HP. Also, pictures printed in standard paper are faded (very poor quality), but I use it for mostly for printing business documents. This is the second Brother laser printer I have owned. The last one I passed on to my husband and he loves it too. His is mono and mine is color. I also had an older Brother printer I bought from someone for $25 and it was so good and lasted so long before it bit the dust, that I decided I would stick to what I knew with Brother printers and chose that brand over all the others. The best part of this printer is that it goes to sleep quickly thus using less energy but revives quickly when you want to print something. Clearing jams is easy, replacing paper in tray is easy, everything about this printer is easy to use. I would recommend it to anyone.
