You would have to insert 2 rechargeable AA batteries for the solar panel to recharge the batteries, it does not have a rechargeable battery included, with the batteries inserted it will only use the batteries to power the LED light when there is not sufficient ambient light for the solar panel to power it, when there is enough light the solar panel will power the LED light and charge the batteries at the same time, the 2AA batteries would power the LED light for about a month on a full charge
